The post-Ferguson era has been the most difficult one in recent history, as there might not be another football team that failed to “properly replace” a coach for that long now. Almost 10 years since they last won the PL, and after several seasons of missing out on the CL, United find themselves at arguably their lowest point in the past years, having lost their opening 2 games while conceding 6 goals and scoring just 1 against Brighton and Brentford.
Despite some integral changes in the team and a “solid” preseason, fans had high hopes for the new season, believing their team could be back where they belong. Now some might argue that the Premier League is the toughest league in the world, and what if with all the changes that took place, the team might need some time to adjust? However, after you lose your first game at home and concede 4 goals in just 35 minutes in your second game, both against much “inferior” teams, you might want to ask some more serious questions than that.
The red devils have been stuck for quite some time now, and most people thought that by appointing Erik ten Hag, they will be able to build their way back to the top. That’s not the case so far though, so what seems to be really the issue here? Players not accepting the new tactics? new signings that are not yet on the top level? Or as the media is portraying it, Ronaldo is having some bad effect on the whole team?

The reds had a strong finish to last season, despite coming second in the league and Champions League, as they will seek to make up for it this season. Things did not go according to plan though, as they failed to pick up a win in their first 2 games. In fact, United can still go on top of them with a win on Monday, how crazy is that? Despite losing Sadio this season, Liverpool invested and brought in some new talents to the team. Will they be able to fill in Mane’s place? Or was the Senegalese the key that was holding the team together?
To be fair, everyone expected Liverpool to secure 2 wins from their opening 2 games, the same as they expected from United. Now the results are definitely not acceptable for a team challenging for the title, but at least they showed more promising football than United. Will that give them the edge at Old Trafford? It’s also interesting to see how Klopp will handle Nunez’s situation, after picking up a red card and probably cost them the 3 points against Palace. The Reds were able to score even though playing with 10 men to secure the draw at Anfield.

A game against United might be the trigger he needs to get his men going, will that be the case though? Or will Old Trafford add more misery to Liverpool’s title hopes?

One thing’s for sure, both teams cannot afford any more setbacks so early in the season. With that in mind, United will raise their game in hope of securing the first win of the season. A win against Liverpool at Old Trafford is more than enough to turn their season around, or at least get the supporters back on their side. Will that be the case? It sure does not look that way, with United’s players seeming to have lost all confidence and are struggling to react and create any solid run from the back, the way Ten Hag likes to build.
Liverpool on the other hand, know exactly what to do. They also had a slow start in the previous campaign but were able to find their form and pushed Man City to the limit. In addition, Klopp will try to build on the phenomenal 5-0 win last year, as he will do anything to secure another win at Old Trafford. Nunez might be out, but the Reds have enough firepower to come out victorious, especially with United’s defense conceding 6 goals in 2 games. New signing Lisandro Martinez has not impressed so far, and Maguire is nowhere near the level of a captain for a club like United. Will Ten Hag bench him for the upcoming crucial game?
